v1.1.8 - Introduces Motion Controls
Version 1.1.8 Release
Hi! I just put out version 1.1.8 which now includes the option to turn on motion controls. I call it beta, since I may still try to make changes/improvements., and I'm interested in gathering feedback.
Captured in the simulator using the playdate as a controller! Trickier than it sounds haha.
Summary of changes while using motion controls:
- D-pad input will be ignored, in order to not skew high scores.
- Motion Control High Scores will be kept separate from the non-motion based High Scores.
- Targets, Bombs, and PowerUps are slightly bigger while using motion controls.
- Since motion controls aren't as precise, I've opted to make the targets a little easier to hit.
- Yet another reason why I've decided to ignore d-pad input while motion controls are on.
Instructions:
To turn ON/OFF motion controls:
While on the main page of the game (that screen that shows the leaderboards and play target)
Press the playdate's menu button, and you should see a `use motion` option.
If you started a game with motion controls on but didn't find them to your liking.
You can end the current game by pressing menu and choosing `exit level` then follow the previous steps to turn motion controls off.
Development Notes:
Trying to add accelerometer based control has been interesting. In my testing, using motion controls brings a new challenge to the game, but does come with some interesting quirks. I've found the best orientation is looking down at the playdate since it provides the most even lighting usually. Although it will support playing upright and even upside down. But I've found that not as convenient since it's harder to keep the screen lit.
I think i'm only scratching the surface of what is possible using accelerometer input.
Can you beat my high score?
